Installation

The structure of the CAL doors resembles the structure of a tree. The tree has roots, trunk, bark and crown and our complete set of exterior door consists of leaf, frame, thermally broken threshold fully integrated with TOP® (Thermal Threshold Beam), appropriate coating and a recommended roofing. Similarly to trees, they require care and professional service.

By learning from nature and drawing on the best carpentry traditions, we used the acquired knowledge and experience in our products.

Care and professional service

The tree growth period is about 150 years. The preparation of wood for production and the manufacturing process itself will last for at least several months. Would you like to ruin such a valuable product with inappropriate installation?

AIG

Ensure correct installation in a conscious and responsible manner. Use the services of the Authorized Installation Groups (AIG).

Authorized Installation Groups are experienced professionals who know how to proceed with CAL products. They had to prove their knowledge and skills by going through exhausting and difficult tests. It’s a pass to the world of the CAL doors, where everything works as it should.

How a tree is built and what follows from this?

  • Crown

The crown, which consists of the leaves and branches at the top of a tree, plays an important role in filtering dust and other particles from the air. It also helps cool the air by providing shade and reduces the impact of raindrops on the soil below.

External doors should be protected from direct precipitation and sun influence by putting them in niches, or by using roofing to cover doors assembled in straight walls. In the CAL door, the recommended roofing or niches function as a crown.

  • Trunk/Stem

The trunk or stem, of a tree supports the crown and gives the tree its shape and strength. The trunk consists of four layers of tissue. These layers contain a network of tubes that runs between the roots and the leaves and acts as the central nourishing system for the tree.

In the CAL doors, these are laminated engineered stiles, reinforced with steel or aluminium profiles as a standard for all collections. It is to increase the rigidity of the door and to prevent it from warping and it’s also to take over most of the loads to which the door is subjected, to such as: wind pressure, loads carried by hinges, changing weather conditions.

  • Bark

The trunk, branches and twigs of the tree are covered with bark. The outer bark, which originates from phloem cells that have worn out, died and been shed outward, acts as an armor against the world by protecting the tree from insects, disease, storms and extreme temperatures. In certain species, the outer bark also protects the tree from fire.

In the CAL doors, eco-friendly coating system ensures an attractive and natural look, that will last for many years and will protect from the impact of external conditions such us: moisture, dirt, dust, insects, fungi or generally occurring pollutions and additionally fulfill the aesthetic role. Regular maintenance of varnish coatings allows for a significant extension of the door service life.

  • Roots

Tree roots absorb water and nutrients from the soil, store sugar and anchor the tree upright in the ground. All trees have lateral roots that branch into smaller and smaller roots and usually extend horizontally beyond the ends of branching.

In the CAL doors it’s a insulated threshold assembly. TOP® which has been specially designed to be fully integrated with the CAL standard thermally broken threshold, protects the door from long term damage, eliminates thermal bridges under the door, and also allows the door to do what it was designed to do: insulate the house from the cold (or hot) outside. The addition of the TOP component simply gives better performance to your door and despite high resistance to moisture and excellent thermal insulation its properties also include high resistance to compression.

Regardless of the precautions, the CAL door should be stored outside only in exceptional situations and for a short period (several days).

Delivery & Storage

Improper storage of the door by exposing it to moisture for a certain period of time is one of the factors affecting functionality and durability.

Acting successfully and with a sense of responsibility, it assumes that the external doors should be protected against: direct precipitation (rain and snow), sun influence, dust and other factors that may cause damage.

The following principles must be observed:

1. It should be stored in rooms on an even level

2. If stored outside, the door must be placed on a solid and level ground, and the top and sides of the pallet must be covered with a non-transparent, waterproof material that provides proper protection against bad weather conditions.

3. There must be sufficient clearance on the pallet to ensure free air circulation. Please note: the manufacturer’s packaging is intended for door protection during delivery from the factory to the recipient’s warehouse.

AIM knows how to secure and properly place the door. This affects not only the comfort of everyday operation, but also helps avoid unpleasant surprises such as: damages, leaks or warping. A careful, well done installation not only protects the door from long term damage, but also allows the door to do what it was designed to do: insulate the house from the cold (or hot) outside. A wrong installation can simply ruin the best product.

Installation and operating conditions of external doors.

High quality products also require a perfect installation. CAL was one of the first manufacturers to introduce a comprehensive guideline for installation and operating conditions of external doors as well as the program of Authorized Installation Groups (AIM)

  1. ROOFING – external doors should be protected from direct precipitation and sun influence by putting them in niches, or by using roofing to cover doors mounted in straight walls. Roofing should extend beyond the outline of the open door and protect the door from direct sunlight at noon, during the summer.
  2. HEAT SOURCE – The minimum distance from the heater to the door should be 150 cm.
  3. INSTALLATION – Wooden exterior doors should be installed after the “wet” construction works inside the building, such as plastering and flooring works, are completed and dried.

Door Installation and Care

Thermal Doorstep Beam Cover®

This kit has been designed for a 100mm aluminium threshold. If you are ordering this item for the previously manufactured door, please give us either the total door width, including the glazing, or the number of the door order.

* Purenit is a German-made insulating material. It is made of a combination of polyurethane foam and aluminium filings. It is characterised by high resistance to chemicals, moisture and fungi. It is also known for its high compressive strength and excellent thermal insulation properties. The advantage of purenit are not only its excellent properties, but also the ease of its processing.

Ground Beam Made of Purenit

It is a structural element with very good thermal and strength characteristics. The 1200 mm long and 50 mm thick Purenit* can be easily cut, drilled, whittled with universal tools and joined at a construction site. Provides a stable foundation for doors with TOP® at -80 mm.

It is recommended to protect the surface of the door 2-3 times a year with a wood care product (alkaline and solvent-based products cannot be used).

Ottimo Door Care Kit

Ottimo Door Care Kit is meant for cleaning, refreshing and restoration of the doors’ surface.
The ingredients of the liquids make it possible to apply them on the surface of both exterior and interior doors. The products are water-based, so they are environment-friendly.

For CAL doorframes, we recommend ISO-BLOCO One 74/5-30 with a strip’s width of 74mm, a thickness prior to expansion of 5mm and an optimum thickness of up to 30mm. It is characterized by a long expansion time, allowing for an accurate door installation.

ISO-BLOCCO One 74/5-30

It is a multi-functional all-in-one joint sealing tape. Its applications include thermal and acoustic insulation, precipitation insulation on the outside, and vapour insulation on the inside. It facilitates a fast and trouble-free door installation at 10⁰C; at lower temperatures the expansion time is longer.

ISO-CONNECT Vario SD

A universal 70 mm wide installation tape with a butyl adhesive strip for securing the installation foam. It is vapour-tight on the inside and vapour-permeable on the outside. It protects the foam against moisture and UV radiation from the outside and against water vapour from the inside. Allows water to evaporate from the insulation joint outside
